Uppuveli is a beach just nort of Trincomale on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The beach is very pleasent although I felt a bit out of place since it was mostly family and couple filled resorts there. The few budget friendly places on the beach were all full so I had to stay in a dump without a running water a little off the beach. So I stayed just long enough to go on a tour to spot some dolphins and do some snorkeling.
There are plenty of people willing to take you to see the dolphins just a short boat ride from the beach. For about 20$ I got on the boat at 5am and out we went. There were a few boats out there and they all chased after the much quicker dolphins, anticipating their next move. There were plenty of dolphins out there, some of them jumping and putting on a show for us. I knew that this was a good place for whale watching but unfortunately the whales were out of season.
Next up was a day trip to Pigeon Island. This Island is a national park and has some of the best corals on the coast of Sri Lanka and well over a hundred species of tropical fish have been spotted here. I was not disappointed. The coral was very healthy and there was abundance of brightly colored fish. I spotted a couple of baby reef sharks and then when I was about to call it a day and lie on the beach I saw a 2+ meter black tip shark just minding its own business so I followed it for as long as I could.
Prices vary a little for these trips, I paid 2000 Rupees for the dolphin tour and 3000 for the snorkeling although that is more expensive than that, I paid the guide who took me instead of to the company, so I got it a little cheaper.
